Should I be concerned about germs if I wash with cold water or set the dryer at low heat?

The purpose of domestic or residential clothes washing has always been dirt removal, not disinfection. Cold water washing with a detergent designed for cold water is sufficient to sanitize the clothes.

There has been a lot of concern--hyped up by misinterpreted fact sheets distributed by the Center for Disease Control--about MRSA. Truthfully, this is most often transferred by skin-to-skin contact and the evidence that clothing acts as a carrier is scant to non-existent.
