We are condo owners too, and not allowed clothes lines or any kind of rack on our balconies. I do sometimes put our rack out there anyway. To me, the clothesline ban is part of a bigger issue at our place -- we also have no way to store bicycles safely and out of the elements, no gardens (despite having lots of room for some). Shame; it's as though our community is one of transient strangers rather than a neighborly home.

We live in a condominium in Rhode Island. The condo association has a ban against a number of things, including clothes lines. My next door neighbor has put up a clothes line at the rear of her condominium. We are facing wetlands, and the line cannot be seen by any passersby. It was discussed at an executive board meeting but no action was taken. One member of the board called my neighbor and told her that the clothes line had to come down. My neighbor was furious, and spoke to me, since my wife and I did not mind the clothesline -- we thought it was a positive thing to do. I told my neighbor not to take it down, unless a formal letter or notice signed by the board was sent to her. None has been received, and the line has remained up for at least two years.

Recently, another condo owner (an original complainant), who sometimes walks her dog behind our condos, mentioned to me that she saw my neighbor's line was still up. I remarked that it is OK with us, and if she wanted some action, she should ask the board to take appropriate action.

I have since put up a clothesline next to my neighbors, and tol the complainant that I had.

So, far, end of story. We will ride this out together should any formal action be taken by our board.
